Obituary for Leslie Burt-Manary (Burt)

Leslie Burt-Manary (Burt)
Burt- Manary , Leslie-
Leslie changed neighbourhoods on Saturday March 18, 2017.
Missing her and mourning her loss are: her mother Pauline Burt, her husband Robert Manary, daughter Meghan (Bryce) and granddaughter Scarlett Rose, and son Douglas, Robert’s daughters Tania and Tara (Dany) and granddaughter Savannah (Dalton) great granddaughter Hailey and grandson Brendan. Leslie was blessed to be surrounded by an amazing supportive circle of friends who were all like sisters to her, especially her cousin Karen Nogiec.

Born an air force brat January 3, 1959 in Grostenquin, Bistroff, Moselle, France to William “Bill”(pre-deceased 2001) and Pauline (Sweet) Burt, Leslie was the oldest of three children. She was pre-deceased by her sister Shelley 1985, and her brother Andrew 2015.

In typical military fashion, the family moved around with stops in Moncton New Brunswick, Trenton, ON and settling in North Bay in 1971 where Leslie attended Centennial Senior Public School, Chippewa Secondary then Canadore College graduating from the Diploma Nursing Program in 1979 as a Registered Nurse. Her career took her west to the small rural community hospital in Bow Island, AB where Leslie worked until 1985, and made many life long friends.
Returning to North Bay, Leslie started working at the former Civic Hospital. A life-long learner and patient advocate Leslie loved being a nurse and often said “It’s not just what I do, it’s who I am”. Never was this passion for her profession more evident than when Leslie worked for several years as a Clinical Instructor for Nursing Students from Canadore College and Nipissing University, telling her students that they were her “fun job”.

Leslie loved to travel and was fortunate to have made many wonderful trips before she got sick. She enjoyed exploring her family history and was always excited to learn who and where her ancestors originated from i.e. descendant of Robert the Bruce.

Her family was truly her life and never was she happier than when everyone would gather together for holiday meals.
Leslie had a positive outlook on life, and shared her cancer on social media in hopes of demystifying the journey and helping others. Her sense of humour and self deprecating wit stayed with her throughout her illness.

Friends are invited to join Leslie’s family at Martyn Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon and evening from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9pm. Funeral services will be held in Omond Memorial United Church at 11:00am on Friday March 24th. Interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. If you wish to honor Leslie’s memory with a memorial donation please consider the Nipissing Serenity Hospice. Online condolences at www.martynfh.com.
